  20. I've done some tweaking to the Vatican Library interface we're serving
  21. from www.ncsa.uiuc.edu (originally by Frans van Hoesel with
  22. contributions by John Ockerbloom); the changes include...
  23.  
  24.   o All images referenced by the interface are now served via http 
  25.     from www.ncsa.uiuc.edu, not via ftp from seq1.loc.gov.
  26.   o All images are now in GIF format (full 256-color, same size).
  27.   o Some tweaks to the exhibit text for readability, typos, etc.

  29. The goal of the changes was to increase performance at the client end.
  30. I am also considering reducing the size of all the images to 1280x1024
  31. or less, since xv is not fast at scaling images down to size.

  33. Also, I see LOC is in the process of putting up a 1492 exhibit on
  34. seq1.loc.gov, and that the old Soviet archive is still sitting there
  35. waiting for a hypermedia interface (hint hint hint :-).
